A Book Every Musician and Pastor Would LOVE to Have!!
I've owned this book for 30 years and read it almost every night before bed. I bought 2 copies (used) for gifts - one is for my pastor (for his birthday) and he just told me he LOVED it! It's perfect - it tells us of the history of this/that hymn - something about the text AND the author. Great to know this kind of information that doesn't come with the hymnal! Enjoy!!
No Music
Has no music notes, this is intended for users who already know the tune/melody. Weird, I never even thought to ask whether a hymnal would contain the music notes.
Wonderful Addition to Morning/Evening Devotionals
I use this mainly as an addition to my morning devotionals, but you could use it for referencing or just about anything. It is devotions based on popular hymns. The one for October 10, for instance, tells us how the beloved hymn "Jesus Loves Me" came to be written.
A wonderful devotional
I was given this many years ago. Absolutely love it. Have given it to many people and they all find it very renewing. I sing the hymn and the other page is a story about the hymn. (I had a cat that I'd gotten from a shelter. It didn't trust anyone or anything. When I started the new year, I was sitting on my bed singing the first hymn..... When I turned around...there was Precious. She came everynight when I sang the hymn.)
I LOVE this book
I LOVE this book. On one side is the hymn and on the other side of the page is the history of the song - who wrote it and why. I never knew many of these and I am loving learning about it all. I am using it for music instruction with my 4 year old
Favorite hymns come to life in devotions
This book means so much to anyone who grew up with the great hymns of the church. It gets right to the heart of what's meant in many of the hymns, expostulates on the passage of Scripture from which some are drawn and often gives the history of the person who wrote the familiar lyrics or melodies. I've enjoyed mine so much I've bought it for others including friends who play the organ in church and some who are responsible for the music ministry at their place of worship. It's always received with great joy and immediately becomes a cherished treasure of the owner.
Hymn devotions
I love reading how the hymns were written and inspired so many years ago. I find this book an inspiration in my devotions and bet you will too.

This is a very nice and informative publication of old hymns. Each hymn gets 2 pages. The words are on one page and a short history of the author on the other. It is especially interesting to read the circumstances or inspiration under which the hymn was written. Biblical verses are also given for reference.
